Christie Laser Projection Reveals Secrets of the Human Brain

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, Portugal is using Christie HS Series laser projectors for the exhibition "Brain, Wider than the Sky," on view at the museum through June 10th, 2019. Founded in 1956 and considered one of Portugal's best museums, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is a private institution dedicated to the promotion of art, philanthropy, education, and science.

This exhibition is a unique journey into the brain's origin, the complexity of the human mind, and the challenges of artificial minds. Also included are historical documents, 3D models, infographics, paintings, interactive activities, and audio-visuals.

The main attraction is a video installation that provides the visitor with an immersive, emotional, and sensory experience of the brain with images by North American artist and neuroscientist Greg Dunn, and powered by Christie HS Series laser projectors.

"We chose Christie projectors for the setup because we needed equipment that would give 4K quality at 60Hz but in a compact package," says Guilherme Martins, cofounder of Artica, the company in charge of integrating the project. "And the truth is that it is one of the best video projectors we have ever used. It gives us well-defined colors and excellent pixel detail. But, the best thing of all is that when there are blacks in the image, there are also blacks in the projection."

The Christie HS Series of 1DLP comes with Christie BoldColor Technology. The patented technology employs red and blue laser diodes, as well as an optical chamber, video processing, and specialized software to produce lifelike visuals when compared to typical laser projectors.

According to Luis Carmo, accounts manager for Total AV, which supplied the equipment for the installation, "...besides the excellent image precision of the Christie 4K7-HS, I would also underscore the compact design (36kg/146lb), its ultra-silent functioning (33dB in Eco mode) and its reliable 24-hour high performance."

Carmo says: "The Christie 4K7-HS model in particular has the advantage of offering 4K UHD resolution, providing spectacular chromatic performance with natural vivid colors, which means that images it produces are incredible, and everything at an affordable price."
