Obsidian Introduces NX3

Obsidian Control Systems has introduced the NX3, an ONYX lighting console developed around the way programmers actually work, the company says. Shaped by direct feedback from lighting designers, programmers, and operators, the NX3 combines motorized faders, extensive RGB backlight feedback, a 17.3" multi-touch display, and direct control of up to 64 Universes in a powerful yet portable platform.

Designed for live production, touring, events, and permanent installations, the NX3 seeks to put speed, precision, and intuitive operation at the center of the programming experience. Its hardware layout works naturally with the ONYX interface, allowing programmers to move quickly between programming, playback, and live operation while keeping their attention where it belongs: on the show.

Programmers, operators, and lighting designers played a major role in shaping the NX3, with their feedback directly influencing its development.

"Users were asking for motorized faders, backlit keys and faders, and a larger screen, and we've delivered while maintaining the workflow and reliability they're familiar with."

Ten motorized faders provide immediate tactile feedback that reflects active playbacks in real time, while customizable RGB-backlit keys, faders, and encoders provide clear visual status and color-coded feedback. A 17.3", ten-point multi-touch display provides ample workspace, with additional space beside the screen for setlists, notes, or tablets during a show.

At the heart of the NX3 is substantial control capacity, with up to 64 universes available directly from the console. This is designed to give programmers the ability to take on increasingly complex productions without immediately requiring additional processing hardware.

"One feature that has resonated strongly is the ability to output 64 Universes directly from the console at a highly competitive price point," Neminathan says. "That helps set the NX3 apart from many alternatives on the market."

Four network ports, support for up to three external displays, an integrated power supply, and expanded parameter control further equip the NX3 for demanding production environments.

Every aspect of the NX3 has been considered around the programmer's interaction with the console. Tuned key response, stable controls, quiet motorized faders, dynamic RGB feedback, and a low-profile ergonomic design support both fast-paced programming and extended sessions.

"As a portable console, motorized faders were essential," Neminathan explains. "When lighting designers and operators are moving between pages, they need immediate access to cue lists and playback controls without hesitation."

The result is a console designed to minimize the effort required to operate the hardware, allowing programmers to concentrate more on programming, creativity, and the production itself.

The NX3 is not simply a standalone console. As part of the wider ONYX ecosystem, it provides a foundation that can expand as productions and programming requirements grow.

Additional displays, networking, and control surfaces can be added while maintaining the same familiar ONYX workflow. Accessories such as the NX P motorized playback wing and NX K keypad provide additional hands-on control without requiring users to change platforms or relearn their programming environment.
