Tony Award Nominations Announced

The nominations for this year's Tony Awards were announced this morning; the design nominations were spread over a wide variety of productions.

In the category of scenic design for a play, the nominees are John Lee Beatty, for Other Desert Cities; Daniel Ostling, for Clybourne Park; Mark Thompson, for One Man, Two Guvnors; and Donyale Werle, for Peter and the Starcatcher.

Nominees for scenic design of a musical are Bob Crowley, for Once; Rob Howell and Jon Driscoll, for Ghost, the Musical; Tobin Ost and Sven Ortel, for Newsies; and George Tsypin, for Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.

Nominees for lighting design of a play are Jeff Croiter, for Peter and the Starcatcher; Peter Kaczorowski, for The Road to Mecca; Brian MacDevitt, for Death of a Salesman; and Kenneth Posner, for Other Desert Cities.

Natasha Katz leads in the category of lighting design for a musical, with nods for both Once and the revival of Follies. Her competition includes Christopher Akerlind, for The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess, and Hugh Vanstone, for Ghost, the Musical.

The category of sound design for a play includes two productions that feature an extensive musical performance aspect: One Man, Two Guvnors (designed by Paul Arditti) and the Judy Garland drama End of the Rainbow (designed by Gareth Owen). The other nominees are Scott Lehrer, for Death of a Salesman, and Darron L. West, for Peter and the Starcatcher.

Nominees for sound design of a musical are Acme Sound Partners, for The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess; Clive Goodwin, for Once; Kai Harada, for Follies; and Brian Ronan, for Nice Work If You Can Get It.

In the category of costume design of a play, the nominees are William Ivey Long, for Don't Dress for Dinner; Paul Tazewell, for A Streetcar Named Desire; Mark Thompson, for One Man, Two Guvnors; and Paloma Young, for Peter and the Starcatcher.

The late Eiko Ishioka was nominated in the category of costume design for a musical, for her work on Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Also nominated are Gregg Barnes, for Follies; ESosa for The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess; and Martin Pakledinaz, for Nice Work If You Can Get It.

Leading the pack with nominations are Once, with 11; The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess and Nice Work If You Can Get It, with 10 apiece; and Peter and the Starcatcher, with nine.
