Richard Pilbrow, Tony Walton to Speak at February 25th Drama Book Shop Book Signing and Reception

Richard Pilbrow

On Monday February 25th, 2013, Richard Pilbrow and Tony Walton will speak at New York's Drama Book Shop from 5-6pm, followed by a 6-7pm reception and signing of Richard's book, A Theatre Project, published by PLASA Media. The Drama Book Shop is located at 250 West 40th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues. Please RSVP to NYC@plasa.org.

Richard Pilbrow, in conversation with his long-time friend Tony Walton, will share fascinating stories about his life in theatre lighting and in designing stages and theatre spaces. A lighting designer, theatre, film, and TV producer; theatre designer; and author; Richard Pilbrow was a pioneer of stage lighting in Britain and theatre design consultant to the National Theatre of Great Britain, and venues around the world, including the New Amsterdam in New York and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. His books, Stage Lighting and Stage Lighting Design have inspired generations of lighting designers since 1970.

Winner of the USITT Golden Pen Award 2013, this new memoir by Pilbrow tells the story of an upstart group of people who shook the world of British theatre, establishing the professions of lighting and sound design and theatre consulting, becoming the world's leading theatre design firm. A Theatre Project takes the reader through the stage door, shares the thrills of producing in the West End, working on Broadway, being present at the birth of the National Theatre with Sir Laurence Olivier, and travelling the world as a theatre designer.

Highlights include war stories on the road to Broadway and the West End; working with Harold Prince, Julie Andrews, Judi Dench; and Paul Newman; discovering Topol; the company's thrilling entrepreneurial success and its over-expansion, which led to disaster; a struggle for survival and renaissance; circling the globe designing theatres with architectural superstars such as Frank Gehry; leading the innovations that transformed the shape of theatre space. A Theatre Project is a spellbinding backstage adventure that will challenge, provoke, entertain, and inspire all who love the magical world of theatre.

"It's an absolute joy to read . . . a history of theatre from an entirely new and fresh perspective," Michael Coveney, WhatsOnStage.com.

"Fascinating theatrical anecdotes . . . a great read . . . extremely informative . . . and it's also inspirational," Martin Moore, TD&T.

"Beautifully produced. Gripping, fascinating story. Very highly recommended." Rob Halliday, Lighting&Sound America.

"Essential reading for everyone who has had, is in the middle of, or is setting out on a backstage career," Francis Reid, Entertainment Technology.

"Rich, engaging, and insightful . . . jam-packed with wonderful stories . . . a visual feast. A Theatre Project is highly recommended," Michael Eddy, Stage Directions.
