D.A.S. Helps Renovate Barcelona's Historic Club Astoria

D.A.S. Aero 8A self-powered compact line array system in the Club Astoria in Barcelona

Barcelona's upscale Eixample neighborhood is home to the spectacular Club Astoria. A stone's throw from famous thoroughfares Paseo de Gracia and Avenida Diagonal, this is the perfect spot to enjoy dinner or drinks with friends in an exclusive and inviting musical setting. The newly renovated space, a Grupo Costa Este property, was previously the site of the Opium Cinema, a landmark of Barcelona nightlife.

In the '70's, this space also housed the famous Cine Astoria, from which the nightspot takes its name. The renovated Club Astoria includes two completely differentiated remodeled areas -- one of them a bit more exclusive, situated in the ampitheatre area, and the other, a more accessible space, located in the old cinema's bar. The space also boasts a club area, which opens its doors after dinner, offering a variety of live shows and performances. One of the high points of this club is that it maintains the original cinema's layout in terms of the ampitheatre, orchestra, and stage.

As an integral part of its overhaul, the site was outfitted with a powerful D.A.S. sound system. The design and installation of this project was carried out by Fokum, a company based in Vila-Sana (Lérida) with extensive experience in the sector. The company offers comprehensive professional sound and lighting services for all types of events and installations, and chose to equip the club area with self-powered line array systems from D.A.S.'s Aero Series 2.

At the helm of this project was the director of the company himself, Josep María Aldomá, who opted to set up two formations of linear Aero 8A self-powered compact line array systems, each made up of four units each. These linear formations were installed on either side of the stage, and the units were configured with the necessary curving angles between them to ensure optimal coverage for the listening zone situated in front of the stage.

Fokum technical professionals recommended using D.A.S. LX-215A self-powered subwoofer systems with double 15" speakers to provide low-frequency reinforcement. The set of subwoofers used in this installation are located in front of and beneath the stage, guaranteeing the widest possible subwoofer coverage for the listening/dance area.

This sound installation is rounded out by a D.A.S. DSP-2060A digital processor system, which functions as the control center for the entire system. Thus the D.A.S. sound system is able to deliver on its guarantee of high quality sound, adding to the attraction of the magnificently appointed Club Astoria.

The huge effort expended on behalf of the technical, real estate, and interior design teams to give new life to this historic space is a testament to Barcelona's reputation as a nightlife point of reference on the Mediterranean and throughout Europe.
