LightFair 2023 Keynote Returns

Karen Treviño

LightFair is hosting the National Park Service Chief of Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division, with a background in energy efficiency, natural resources, and outdoor photic environments, as its 2023 Keynote speaker to educate attendees on the sustainable future of lighting. Additionally, LightFair will offer five days of inspiration-packed programming developed in partnership with the IES and IALD, May 21 - 23 in New York City. Early bird registration is open for the Conference and Trade Show through March 31.

Registration is at www.lightfair.com/register.

"Sustainability and light pollution are important topics to be informed about, especially when it comes to early decision-making for commercial and industrial lighting projects, and we are thrilled to present a Keynote Speaker with this niche expertise," says Dan Darby, show director. "Thanks to the active content curation role played by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), this year's LightFair Conference and the Keynote speaker elevate the conversation around key topics that impact the industry, and will address trends in lighting, push boundaries and celebrate the multidisciplinary interconnections within lighting and beyond."

Karen Treviño, chief of the National Park Service Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division, will serve as Keynote speaker for the 2023 edition of LightFair. In Chasing Darkness Into the Light: Preserving Night Skies in National Parks, Treviño will share her experiences, wins and challenges in turning a small, little-known program into a national success and discuss how outdoor lighting can effect national park resources and values. The keynote session takes place on the opening day of the Trade Show, Tuesday, May 23, at noon.

Treviño has spent the past 15 years in different capacities with the US National Park Service. In her current position, she works to advance the mission of the National Park Service by "preserving and restoring acoustic and photic environments throughout the National Park System by working in partnership with parks and partners to increase scientific understanding and inspire public appreciation of natural sounds and night skies."

In addition to her role as a member of the senior leadership team of Natural Resource Stewardship and Science directorate of the NPS, Treviño sits on the NPS National Resource Advisory Group, the National Parks Overflights Advisory Group, the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas/Urban Parks Specialist Group Dark Sky Advisory Group, the Federal Interagency Committee on Aviation Noise. She spent ten years on the NPS National Wilderness Leadership Council. Treviño was the keynote speaker at the New Zealand Starlight Conference in 2019 and participated in the Climate Group's LED Scale Up Financial Roundtable meetings.

More information on the Keynote Speaker can be found at www.lightfair.com/keynote.

The 2023 LightFair Conference will offer 100+ accredited sessions with nearly 200 presenters over its five-day run. The five interconnected tracks -- Art, Business, Process, Science and Technology -- will provide a variety of 1-day and 3-hour long courses and tracks with either 90-minute sessions or 60-minute sessions. Preceding the trade show, two days (May 21 - 22) will be dedicated to immersive education -- a feature not found at many other lighting industry events.

• Beautiful and Responsible Outdoor Lighting for All! Presented by Charles Stone (Fisher Marantz Stone), Nancy Clanton (Clanton & Associates), Naomi Miller (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory) and Randy Burkett (RBLD)
