PR Lighting XLED 590s Used on Wetten, Das, German TV Show

Manfred Voss

The stage set for one of Germany's most famous and longest-running live TV shows was recently illuminated by 120 XLED 590's from PR Lighting.

The units were selected by show lighting director Manfred Voss as floor effects for the ZDF show, Wetten, Dass, a game and entertainment TV series, which broadcasts six times a year from different theatres in Germany.

The LD, who has enjoyed a long relationship with both the show and the public-service German television channel, used them to highlight the recent performances of Bruno Mars and Udo Jürgens, enabling the Saturday-night prime-time viewing audience (plus 2,000 in the auditorium) to see the bright floor-mounted effects, which were integrated in the stage sets of both acts.

"We have a standard lighting set, which is customized for the respective needs of each show -- and for the music-related acts we create our own lighting set -- using different cues and presets for each performer," explained Voss.

He particularly likes to work with floor lamps and LED elements. "What I look for is a good optical system with zoom, flicker-free LED, low noise fans, low weight and compact dimension. As we sometimes use up to 180 floor lamps in one set, this not only presents a huge logistical challenge for my team, with minimal set-change times, but also on the budget," he added.

When Focon Showtechnic, PR Lighting's German distributors, introduced him to the XLED 590 for the first time, he says he knew he had found a fully-featured head that met these criteria - and which he could use within budget. In addition to the price advantage and compatibility with the rest of the set, Voss added, "The XLED 590 read well to camera and demonstrated good brightness and color burn-in."

The LED wash light derives its power from the super brightness of Osram's Diamond Dragon LED, each head containing 30 each of the RGB LEDs -- at the same time offering excellent color mixing, high uniformity of the white beam and ten preset fixed colors.
