Studio School of Design Launches New Lighting Design Fundamentals Course

Course topics will include lighting for live events, console training, research, drawing, presentation, and collaboration skills.

Studio School of Design (SSD) announces its first in-person course: Lighting Design Fundamentals.

SSD has offered online courses, in-person workshops, and seminars since its inception in 2021. This autumn, in partnership with major supporters New York Center for Creativity and Dance and PRG, it will launch its fundamentals course in a newly fitted light lab classroom in Manhattan. The 12-week course will run from September 8-November 24, meeting on Saturday mornings and Monday evenings.

Taught by working industry professionals, course topics will include lighting for live events, console training, research, drawing, presentation, and collaboration skills. The cost for the full 12 weeks is $1,500, with a 20% early bird discount if paid on or before August 1. Limited scholarships are available. The application deadline is August 15.

This course is a major step in the development of Studio School of Design as it expands from free and low-cost classes and workshops for high school students, teachers, working professionals, and community members into long-term experiential courses. Clifton Taylor, co-founder, says, "There is a gap in training opportunities, and this course will help people who want to gain design skills at an affordable price point." SSD board president Mark Stanley adds, "The course will be attractive to those who want to increase their design knowledge while they are working and freelancing."

Keeping the tuition costs low for the participants is key to opening doors to the profession. Taylor says, "This course is for talented learners who have a passion for theatre and light who are looking for mentorship opportunities and facilities to explore and learn. SSD is looking to attract all learners."

In 2022 SSD was awarded the Spotlight Prize from the Lighting Design Awards for its focus on "education accessibility, diversity, and inclusivity."

Support for Studio School of Design comes from individuals, charitable foundations, and corporations. Past and current donors include: The Gilbert Hemsley Lighting Programs, Seattle Foundation, ETC, PRG, Barbizon, Martin Professional, 4Wall Entertainment, Main Light, Chelsea Factory, and The Joyce Theater.
