Mountain Productions Builds Its Largest Scaffold Structure at Electric Daisy Carnival, Las Vegas

Largest scaffold structure by Mountain Productions for the Electric Daisy Carnival

Mountain Productions, Inc. has built the largest scaffold structure in its history at the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) in Las Vegas. The main stage structure was constructed using over 670,000 pounds of scaffolding and structures, and stood 85' tall. With an overall width of 480' (180' wider than a football field), all of the scaffolding used for the main stage would span over 50 miles if laid end to end.

Mountain Productions' lead engineer, Paul Serkosky, P.E., began working on the EDC Vegas project only nine weeks prior to the show. "In my 19 years here, this is the largest scaffolding structure I have ever worked on, with the AutoCAD models containing over 49,000 scaffolding components," Serkosky states. This includes the main stage blueprints as well as four 80' tall audience towers that Mountain Productions also engineered and built. Combined, the main stage and towers consisted of 1,026,000lb. Of scaffolding. This year's EDC Vegas project was also the first time that Mountain Productions' supervisors viewed the construction drawings exclusively on Apple iPads, saving over 10,000 sq. ft. of traditional paper print copies. The main stage was designed to resist 90mph wind speeds with all equipment installed, and was closely monitored with the help of WeatherOps forecasting. Once the scaffold wall was constructed, the production companies hung scenic flats, video screens, inflatables, and the centerpiece of the stage -- a 35' tall animatronic owl with a 76' wingspan.
