Applications Being Accepted, December 15 to January 1, for Howell Binkley Fellowship Applications will be accepted between December 15 and January 1 for the 2026 edition of the Howell Binkley Fellowship. The fellowship offers individual exposure to New York City-based lighting designers and the theatrical lighting community. It will expose them to the worlds of commercial and nonprofit lighting design. The fellowship recipient will have direct access to Binkley's two key associates of many years: Ryan O'Gara and Amanda Zieve. They will provide an inside look at the industry, including developing excellent drafting techniques, advice on finding the next job, observing the tech of a regional, opera, dance, or Broadway production, and experience at the tech table for the process of a show. This fellowship will take place in the fall or spring and will last three months. The ideal candidate must be 21 years of age or older and a US citizen, and have at least two years of higher education or equivalent experience. If they are currently in an education program, they must be about to graduate. Recent graduates also may apply. Candidates must have a design background and a desire to have a career in theatrical lighting design. A candidate must also be proactive, reliable, hardworking, mature, and a self-starter. Applicants must submit a resume and a one-page statement addressing the following questions: What drew you to lighting design? Why does this specific opportunity interest you? Why are you the ideal candidate for this mentorship, and what do you hope to gain? Additional required submissions include two letters of recommendation emailed directly to BinkleyFellowship@gmail.com and links to a website or digital portfolio. The fellowship program honors the legacy of Howell Binkley, designer of many Broadway shows, including Hamilton and Kiss of the Spider Woman, and co-founder of Parsons Dance. When referring to having young designers observe the process with him and his team, he would always say, "No one has ever done this for me." This fellowship continues his efforts, providing the extra "push" and assistance in fostering the next generation of theatrical lighting designers as they begin their careers. For Further Information and/or to email completed applications, please contact Ryan O'Gara and Amanda Zieve at BinkleyFellowship@gmail.com.
