Derek McLane Receives Art Directors Guild Award for 86th Annual Academy Awards

Derek McLane

Among the winners of this year's Art Directors Guild Awards, which honor achievement in the film and television industries, is the well-known theatre set designer Derek McLane, who was honored for his work on the 8th6 edition of the Academy Awards ceremony. This was the third Oscar ceremony designed by McLane, who also handled the two previous editions. All three broadcasts were seen on ABC.

McLane has also designed for television The Sound Music Live! and Peter Pan Live!, the highly-rated television productions of vintage Broadway musicals, which have proven to be high ratings earners for NBC.

The designer continues to work extensively in theatre. On Broadway, he currently has Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. This spring, he will bring in Living on Love, a new comedy starring the opera diva Renee Fleming, and Gigi, a revival of the stage version of the Lerner and Loewe musical, which is currently trying out in Washington, DC. Off Broadway, he opens Posterity, a new play by Doug Wright, at the Atlantic Theatre in March. Hamish Linklater stars.

Other winners of the Art Directors Guild Awards were the films The Grand Budapest Hostel, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Birdman, and the television shows Game of Thrones, True Detective, American Horror Story: Freak Show, Silicon Valley, The Big Bang Theory, and the web series Apple.
