ITEAC 2018: The Bridge Theatre Visit and Session

With a panorama of the famous Tower of London across the River Thames and the iconic Tower Bridge right outside, the newest edition to London's theatre scene may be the new kid on the block amongst its neighbors, but already it's one to be reckoned with.

The Bridge Theatre is the first commercial venue of its size to be built in London for sixty years. It was conceived by the same team that guided twelve years of triumphant artistic and financial success at the subsidized Royal National Theatre, Nicholas Hytner and Nick Starr.

On Sunday, June 3, for the first time as part of the conference program at the International Theatre Engineering and Architecture Conference (ITEAC), delegates will leave the conference venue, IET: Savoy Place, to take their seat; to listen to the debate and to experience the auditorium in the very theatre under discussion.

They will hear how the creation of the 900-seat venue made extensive use of the available engineering design tools, producing a space that it would not have been possible to conceive just twenty-five years ago. The flexibility allows theatre-makers the luxury of adapting the staging for each production to suit its needs -- whether it be a traditional proscenium arrangement, audience promenade, or an extending three-sided thrust.

The session will look at the theatre's inception, the drivers for and constraints upon the design, with speakers including Nick Starr and Katrina Gilroy, representing the venue, design director Roger Watt of the architectural practice Haworth Tompkins and Mark Ager, CEO, TAIT Stage Technologies, founder sponsor of ITEAC 2018.

As part of the visit, delegates will have opportunities to explore the venue.

At the end the afternoon conference session all delegates are warmly invited to remain at The Bridge Theatre to enjoy the ITEAC 2018 opening day drinks reception.
