Obie Award Winners Announced

The Obie Awards, which honor excellence in New York's Off Broadway theatres scene, were announces on Monday, May 21.

In the design category, lighting designer Lap Chi was cited for sustained excellence. This season alone, he has contributed to Oedipus El Rey and Mlima's Tale, both at the Public Theater; Describe the Night, at Atlantic Theater Company; and An Ordinary Muslim, at New York Theatre Workshop. Describe the Night, written by Rajiv Josehph was also named best new American play.

Sarah Laux was cited for the costume design of Jerry Springer: The Opera, produced The New Group. And an award went to the entire design team of He Brought Her Heart Back in a Box, by Adrienne Kennedy, produced by Theatre for a New Audience: Christopher Barreca (scenery), Justin Ellington (sound), Donald Holder (lighting), Montana Levi Blanco (costumes), and Austin Switser (video).

Receiving a special citation were the cast and creative team of Yerma, produced by the Young Vic Theatre at Park Avenue Armory: Simon Stone (director), Lizzie Clachan (set design), Alice Babidge (costume design), James Farncombe (lighting design), Stefan Gregory (sound design), and Maureen Beattie, Brendan Cowell, John MacMillan, Billie Piper, Charlotte Randle, and Thalissa Teixeira (cast).
