Appotronics Bring Immersive Visuals to 15th China National Games Closing Ceremony

"When hundreds of beams lit up simultaneously, the once-dark sea transformed into a vibrant field of color," says Sun.

The closing ceremony of the 15th National Games of China, on November 21 at Shenzhen's Qianhai Happy Theater, delivered a landmark visual experience, merging sea, sky, architecture, and performance into a panoramic stage.

For the first time in the National Games' history, the ceremony moved beyond a traditional stadium. The creative team built a 1,600-sq.-m. "paper stage" on the water -- just 0.5m thick -- capable of lifting one end up to 10m. As it rose, the platform appeared weightless, as if emerging from the sea and blending naturally with the distant skyline.

According to Sun Tianwei, chief stage and scenic designer, the vast waters before the audience were initially dark.To illuminate the stage "backdrop," including the sea in front of the audience and the coastline located more than 2km from the stage, the production team commissioned Shenzhen-based Appotronics to develop a custom high-power full-color laser searchlight. Hundreds of these "super beam" fixtures were positioned along the coastline, forming a long-distance beam system that established the ceremony's striking visual identity.

"We tested these lights -- they can reach over 4,000m," Sun says. "When hundreds of beams lit up simultaneously, the once-dark sea transformed into a vibrant field of color. Sweeping across the water, the beams converged on the central stage, echoing the 'sheet of paper' concept and creating a stunning visual poem -- a tableau of stars reflected on the ocean, a breathtaking vision of sea and cosmos."

Appotronics supplied 300 units of its newly developed Quasar full-color laser searchlight, the company's first high-power engineering-grade beam fixture. Positioned along the coastline, on both sides of the stage, and across the water at Qianhai Stone Park, the fixtures formed the backbone of the lighting system. Throughout the performance, the beams moved in sync with musical and choreographic cues, generating a layered sense of scale and ceremonial grandeur.

The Quasar's extremely high brightness, pure color output, razor-sharp beam quality, and strong atmospheric penetration ensured that even audiences several kilometers away could clearly perceive crisp, well-defined beams cutting through the night. Its full-color laser engine eliminates traditional color filters, preserving full brightness and delivering superior color purity. A 16-bit RGB color-mixing engine produces more than 16.77 million colors, offering both precise reproduction and broad creative flexibility.

Delivering 60,000 lux at 100, the Quasar ranks among the brightest fixtures in its class, enabling a single unit to maintain strong presence even against dense urban ambient light. Designed for challenging outdoor conditions, it features IP66 protection, operates from -40 degrees C to 40 degrees C, and incorporates corrosion-resistant materials capable of withstanding salt-laden coastal air.

"The Quasar full-color laser searchlight represents a strategic leap for Appotronics in professional engineering lighting," says Zhang Feng, general manager of Appotronics' professional display business unit. "It is not only our first searchlight product but also embodies our determination to explore and lead in new global markets."

Appotronics has confirmed Quasar will make its international debut at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2026, where the company will showcase the platform to global partners and explore collaboration opportunities. The company is also developing a family of laser beam fixtures and AI-assisted workflows to streamline lighting design, programming, and on-site operation.
