Chimerica Sweeps Design Categories at Olivier Awards

The Olivier awards were presented April 13 at a ceremony held at London's Royal Opera House, with Lucy Kirkwood's Chimerica, a portrait of a photojournalist in search of the subject of his most iconic picture, taking home awards for best lighting, sound, and set design.

White Light Awards for Best Lighting Design went to Tim Lutkin and Finn Ross for their work on Chimerica at the Almeida Theatre and Harold Pinter Theatre as well asPaul Pyant for his work on Charlie And The Chocolate Factory at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Other nominees for the award included Paule Constable for The Light Princess at the National Theatre in Lyttelton and Peter Mumford for Ghosts at the Almeida Theatre and Trafalgar Studios.

Awards for best sound design went to Carolyn Downing for Chimerica and Gareth Owen for Merrily We Roll Along at the Harold Pinter Theatre. Simon Baker was nominated for his work on The Light Princess, as was Clive Goodwin for Once at the Phoenix Theatre.

The XL Video Award for Best Set Design went to Es Devlin for Chimerica. The nominees also included Bob Crowley for Once, Tim Goodchild for Strangers On A Train at the Gielgud Theatre, and Mark Thompson for Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.

The only award voted for by the general public, The BBC Radio 2 Audience Award, was presented to Les Misérables, which celebrates its 30th anniversary in London next year.
