Martin Professional and City Theatrical Announce Universal Connect Module Standard for Lighting Fixtures

Martin Professional and City Theatrical have jointly announced the release of the Universal Connect Module (UCM) standard, an open interface designed to simplify how lighting fixtures integrate with upgrade modules. The standard allows manufacturers to create plug-in modules that add functionality such as wireless connectivity, wired networking, and local show playback without requiring fixture redesign.

The Universal Connect Module standard enables module manufacturers to build plug-in solutions that function across any UCM-compatible fixture, giving designers and technicians a more flexible path to updating technology over time. For fixture manufacturers, the standard provides a unified approach for integrating multiple technologies without embedding each one into the fixture itself. For end users, it means long-term adaptability -- allowing teams to add the capabilities they need for a specific production without being tied to a single system or technology generation.

City Theatrical has introduced two Multiverse Connect Modules compatible with the standard, including versions in the 2.4GHz and 900MHz ranges. Martin Professional has incorporated UCM slots into its MAC Viper XIP and MAC Aura Raven XIP fixtures. A third Martin fixture featuring UCM compatibility will debut at the LDI 2025 trade show, with more to come.

"The Universal Connect Module standard gives rental companies and technicians freedom to choose the connectivity solutions that best fit their projects," says Wouter Verlinden, product manager of creative LED, lighting and control at Martin Professional. "Rather than locking users into a single technology, this approach ensures long-term adaptability."

City Theatrical highlighted the benefits of an open, scalable framework for both manufacturers and users. "Our Multiverse wireless technology is now available as a modular option for any fixture supporting UCM," says Keegan Hitz, director of OEM Partnerships at City Theatrical. "This standard makes it easier for manufacturers to integrate advanced features and for end users to keep pace with changing production requirements."

Documentation for the Universal Connect Module standard is available through the Martin Professional and City Theatrical websites, and both companies welcome additional manufacturers interested in joining the standard.
