IMS at Outside Lands Festival

Outside Lands Festival

It's summer in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. 200,000 people are enjoying three days of live rock & roll, and more. . . No, it's not the Summer of Love, 1967, it's the tenth annual Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, where the crowds are cleaner, and Flower Power is now a sustainable, green business. And, flying high over the stage is a festoon lighting system featuring IMS DMX-controlled RGBWW lamps.

Conceived by renowned stage and lighting designer Andi Watson (known for his tenure with the band Radiohead), with production, fabrication, and installation by Iron Bloom of New York, the Land's End main stage structure featured 420 IMS Mk2 festoon lamps hovering overhead, conjuring abstracts of the Bay Area's many suspension bridges. The stage was home to over 50 acts throughout the weekend, including Metallica, Gorillaz, and The Who.

"Andi was looking for something high-impact and low profile, and he chose the IMS system because of its brightness, rich colors, and versatility," says Iron Bloom co-founder, William Irons. "The installation has to be struck each year and the IMS lamps are suitably durable, not to mention the system's ease of integration into a live concert." Watson and Irons pixel-mapped the IMS lamps, using nearly 600' of festoon cable with 16" lamp spacing, and seven IMS PortableMount Universe Drives. Says Irons, "The system worked like a charm and I'm happy to report that the effects were exactly what Andi was after."

In addition to his extensive work internationally with acts such as Radiohead, Zazie, and Oasis, and now with his own shingle, Andi Watson Design LTD, Watson has taken the post of creative director for Superfly, the founding production company behind Outside Lands.

Co-founded by William Irons and Gabriel Evansohn, Iron Bloom is a design and creative production studio specializing in immersive physical spaces and holistic world-building for live experiences and events. Learn more about Iron Bloom at www.ironbloomny.com.

Along with Superfly, Outside Lands was founded and is produced by Bay Area mainstays, Another Planet Entertainment.

Intelligent Marquee Systems (IMS) Mk2 individually DMX-controlled, long-life, LED marquee/festoon lighting systems feature RGBWW, dynamic white, and warm white V12 "filament" versions. Shatterproof and outdoor-rated, IMS lamps last many years and are safe to use in public areas. The IMS lamps' standard Edison base can easily retrofit into existing wiring. Universe drive power supplies are available in RackMount, PortableMount (ideal for truss), DIN Rail, and IP65 outdoor versions. A very handy and powerful HHP (hand held programmer), used to address the individual lamps, completes the system.
