In Memoriam: Barton MyersBarton Myers, the architect behind some of the best-known performing arts buildings of the last quarter-century, died in August. He was 91. Architectural Record reported his death, following the publication of a notice in the Santa Barbara Independent. Among his achievements in the performing arts sector are The Dr. Phillips Center in Orlando, Florida; The Tempe Center for the Arts, in Tempe, Arizona; NJPAC in Newark, New Jersey; The Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in Cerritos, California; and Portland Center For the Arts in Portland, Oregon. A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Myers was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and an Air Force veteran. He earned an MA in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, working with the famed Louis Kahn in the mid-1960s. He opened his own practice, Diamond and Myers, in 1968, followed by Barton Myers Associates in 1975. In 1984, he shifted the firm's base to the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Among his other performing arts projects are the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta, and an expansion plan for the Stratford Festival in Ontario. His awards include the Toronto Arts Award for Architecture, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Gold Medal and the American Institute of Architects, Los Angeles Chapter Gold Medal. He taught at the University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, University of Virginia, University of Pennsylvania, Harvard Graduate School of Design, and University of California, Los Angeles School of Architecture and Urban Design. Myers was predeceased by his wife, Victoria, who ran his practice from 1975 to 2019. His survivors include his daughter Suzanne and grandchildren, Henry and Thea Pincus.
