Brittany-based lighting manufacturer, Chromlech, has been awarded an "Etoile du SIEL" ("Star of SIEL") during the annual award ceremony at SIEL 2013 in Paris. The award was given for the Chromlech Elidy, the world's first LED matrix fixture able to produce volumetric light graphics.

Launched at PLASA 2012, Chromlech Elidy is a matrix of 5 x 5 very high power LEDs, driven by state-of-the-art electronics to provide what the company says is the world's first LED wall capable of projecting light. Specific optics and high-output, warm white LEDs combine to generate extremely narrow beams that exceed the intensity of LED screens.

Elidy is modular in form, based around a single projector of 25 LEDs (one sq. ft.), which can be assembled to form up to 225 LEDs (one sq. m.) and arranged into screens, columns, or even angled forms.

Full frame or open frame options are available, the former producing a solid backdrop, while the latter gives a 50% level of transparency unique to LED screens. Innovative magnetic covers allow Elidy's surface to be instantly customized to any color, texture, or pattern, including logos or composite pictures.

Data management and control are handled via DMX and Art-Net. Animations, from simple to complex, can be created across the surface of Elidy using its advanced, though intuitive and user-friendly pixel-mapping interface, properties the company says are already finding purpose in diverse applications from rock and roll to retail display.

Elidy's dimming capabilities also ensure perfectly smooth dimming with no stepping or cut off which makes it suitable for theatre, studio, and film use.

The current award is the second Etoile du SIEL for Chromlech, having received its first in 2012 for Gleamer, the DMX-controlled, low-voltage dimmer. Gleamer subsequently went on to receive the PLASA Award for Innovation and the LDI Product Award of the Year.

"To be recognized by the industry two years in a row is a great achievement for us," says product manager, Kevin Migeon. "Last year's Etoile du SIEL put us on the map and it was very exciting to see that acknowledgement go international at LDI and PLASA. But to win again this year with Elidy shows we are in it for the long run! Elidy has already been specified on a number of high profile projects for 2013 and we are delighted with the way it has captured the industry's imagination. We think it is definitely a case of 'watch this space'!"
