Pete's Big TVs on BET's Evening of Stars

Pete's Big TVs recently outfitted multi-projection areas for the stage of the 33rd annual An Evening of Stars benefit for the United Negro College Fund. The show was taped in front of a live audience August 14 at the Pasadena Civic Center. It aired September 25 on the BET Network.

Guy Benjamin, of Pete's Big TVs, said the company's role was to carry out the design by production designer Anton Goss to outfit four different projection areas of the set with gear, including Barco 20K and Barco 12K projectors, a Toshiba 6mm high resolution LED screen, and an Elation 20mm LED medium resolution video flex screen. Benjamin headed the crew of Matt Ellar and Jody Lane.

Goss also worked with Pete's Big TVs on the MTV Woodie Awards this year. The production designer of many TV competition shows -- most recently NBC's The Voice -- applied his skill to this stage for the theme of "Educating Our Future." Joining him on this event was art director Dave Edwards and lighting designer Otis Howard.

This year's design differed from the UNCF's past telethon shows since it first began airing in 1979. The new format followed in a musical variety show style. Video segments highlighted some of the students UNCF supports each year. This new format allowed UNCF to attract top stars, with hopes of increasing interest and support when it airs.

Enlivening the stage with musical performances were Erykah Badu, Anthony Hamilton, Patti LaBelle, Jill Scott, Ledisi, Marsha Ambrosius, Estelle, Musiq Soulchild and Miguel. A string of TV and film celebs made special appearances as well.
