Winners of 2022 Jeff Awards Announced

The winners of the Jeff Awards, which honor achievement in the Chicago professional theatre scene, were given on October 17.

In the category of scenic design for a large theatre, Rachel Hauck won for Good Night, Oscar, produced at the Goodman Theatre. A play about the concert pianist, actor, and all-around celebrity Oscar Levant, it will open on Broadway in April. The scenic design winner in the midsize category was Joe Schermoly for Hurricane Diane, Madeline George's ecological comedy, produced by Theatre Wit.

Winning in the category of costume design for a large theatre was Ryan Park, for Paramount Theatre's production of the popular musical Kinky Boots. Park was also nominated for Evita, produced by Drury Lane Productions. The midsize theatre winner was Myron Elliott-Cisneros for The Moors, Jen Silverman's dark satire of Gothic novels, produced by A Red Orchid Theatre.

Taking the award for sound design for a large theatre was André Pluess, for Good Night, Oscar; Pluess was also nominated for The Lady from the Sea, at Court Theatre, and Mr. Dickens' Hat, at North Light Theatre.

In the category of lighting design for a large theatre, Jason Lynch won for Choir Boy, Tarell Alvin McCraney's popular drama about homophobia in a prep school for Black students, produced by Steppenwolf Theatre Company. The midsize theatre award was taken by K Story, for The Moors.

In the category of projection design, Rasean Davonte Johnson and Michael Salvatore won for the musical science fiction spoof It Came from Outer Space, produced by Chicago Shakespeare. Johnson was also nominated for Her Honor Jane Byrne, produced by Lookingglass Theatre Company, and Fannie, The Life and Music of Fannie Lou Hamer, produced by Goodman Theatre in association with Seattle Repertory Theatre and Asolo Repertory Theatre.
