In Memoriam: Nelson Meacham

Nelson Meacham

Lighting&Sound America has learned of the death of Nelson Meacham on January 16 from recurrent atypical meningioma. He was 76.

A second-generation Californian, Meacham earned a BS in engineering in 1970 from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. In 1976, he went to work for WED Enterprises, which later became Walt Disney Imagineering. He spent more than two decades doing progressively more complex work on theme park projects in Florida, Tokyo, Paris, and Hong Kong. He also led significant efforts in motion picture technology at the Walt Disney Studios Sound Department and Disney Feature Animation.

After 32 years, Meacham retired in 2008. He remained active in industry organizations, including Audio Engineering Society, Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (he was a life fellow since 1977) and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (being a voting member of the Sound Branch since 1982). He always attended the LA Conservancy's Last Remaining Seats series of classic films in historic theatres. He loved piano and organ music, attending concerts, and supporting the preservation of historic instruments. He volunteered at Walt Disney's Carolwood Barn (an old-fashioned model train museum) and the LA Live Steamers Railroad Museum in Griffith Park.

Meacham is survived by his cousins-Wes Ashcraft, Jim Burns, Kathy Burns, and Maureen Burns-and an extended loving family. A celebration of his life was held on February 26 at the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles. The family requests that donations be made to the "Meacham Memorial," which will fund programs for the great organs of First Church, by visiting www.FCCLA.org/Nelson-Meacham.
