PRG Launches Foton Digital Lighting Fixture

Production Resource Group, L.L.C., (PRG) has announced the official launch and immediate availability of Foton, the first fixture in its new TruColor line of digital lighting for image capture. The announcement comes three months after Foton was awarded the 2011 Cine Gear Expo Technical Award in the lighting category. Foton's incorporation of remote phosphor technology allows it to achieve a CRI of more than 95 with a nearly continuous light spectrum. It was designed to eliminate the color-accuracy issues inherent in LED lighting for film and television production.

"To find a product, such as the Foton, that could maintain an accurate CRI, is amazing," said Joshua Thatcher, Cine Gear lighting judge and lighting programmer whose credits include Iron Man 2 and Cowboys & Aliens. "I found that to be impressive and something that the industry has been looking for."

Foton is flicker-free at any frame rate, "silent," waterproof, and generates little heat. It is initially available matching tungsten sources, in either AC (90-305 VAC) or DC (12-40 VDC) models. Power consumption is less than 30 watts. Local dimming from 0-100% is achieved with negligible shift in CCT. The Foton AC unit also allows for output control though any external dimmer. It utilizes a bayonet-style system for attachments to alter the beam characteristics. The unit ships with three open-face reflectors, providing 20-, 40-, and 60-degree beam angles in a single-source hard light. With the 20-degree reflector attached, the Foton delivers over 400 lux at 3m. Barn doors and gel frames are also available.

Foton is now available worldwide through PRG's dealer network. Daylight models will be available in early 2012.

"Starting with Foton, the TruColor Series represents a new benchmark in digital lighting for image capture," said Rich Pierceall, PRG's director of digital lighting sales.
