JVC Firmware Upgrades for ProHD Streaming Camcorders Now Available

GY-HM650 JVC camcorder

JVC Professional Video, a division of JVCKENWOOD USA Corporation, announces the availability of firmware upgrades for its ProHD streaming camcorders. Among other improvements, version 4.0 for the GY-HM650 and version 2.0 for GY-HM850 and GY-HM890 models feature adaptive bit rate technology for more reliable streaming, a high quality 12Mbps mode, and support for Real Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP), which allows a direct connection to a number of content distribution networks (CDNs) for live streaming.

Requested by broadcast customers, adaptive bit rate technology automatically adjusts video quality to take advantage available bandwidth and increases streaming reliability in the field. "Stations that have been successfully using our built-in HD streaming technology are reporting even more reliability in the field with this firmware upgrade," said Edgar Shane, general manager of engineering, JVC Professional Video. "Adaptive bit rate technology substantially improves our unbonded cellular transmission."

For streaming within closed networks, a 12Mbps mode provides production quality images. When used with JVC's private wireless network system or the recently introduced ProHD BR-DE800 decoder, the result is a highly reliable, contribution quality wireless signal.

RTMP support, already available in JVC's 4KCAM streaming camcorder models, allows CDN connectivity without a computer or video infrastructure. Through a recently announced partnership with Ustream, the world's live video platform leader, a live webcast can be initiated by pressing a single button on the camera.

There is also a version 4.0 upgrade for the GY-HM600 ProHD camcorder that adds zebra function to the LCD, color change for simultaneous use of zebra and focus assist, and improved preset zoom control. Upgrades are free for all current GY-HM600, GY-HM650, GY-HM850, and GY-HM890 owners, and are available on the JVC Web site at http://pro.jvc.com/firmware.
