ABTT Theatre Show Highlights Alternative Means of Transportation

This year's ABTT (Association of British Theatre Technicians) Theatre Show is hopeful that any tube strikes will be resolved and the show will not be affected by travel problems. But visitors to the UK's premier event for theatre and staging technology should remember that there are plenty of other ways to get to the Show venue in Victoria without relying on the Underground.

Many of the exhibitors at the 2011 Theatre Show are highlighting green and low-emission technologies so visitors might want to show eco-solidarity by using foot power to get there. The Royal Horticultural Halls exhibition centre is only a short walk from Victoria mainline railway station, with Waterloo further along on the other side of the River Thames.

The Barclay's Cycle Hire scheme is another viable and eco-friendly way to get to the Show. Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, wants the distinctive blue and silver bikes to be as common round London as black cabs and red buses and with many cycle docking stations outside the Royal Horticultural Halls, ABTT visitors can play their part in raising the profile of the "Boris bike."

The good old London omnibus is useful for longer distances, with services running into Victoria bus station at the front of the mainline terminus and along Victoria Street. There are routes from most of the other main rail stations: the 36 runs from Paddington, the 73 from Euston Square (near Euston mainline) and the 11 from Liverpool Street, also passing through Charing Cross, which additionally has the 24. Victoria and Waterloo stations are connected by the 507 bus.

Those with a little more time to spare could take a boat on the River Thames. Regular services dock at Westminster Pier, which is also within walking distance of the Horticultural Halls. And anyone with a good expenses account can always hail the traditional London cab.

Anyone deciding to make their way in by car should remember the Congestion Charge and that there are limited number of parking meters near the Halls.

More details on services and updates on the Tube strikes can be found at the Transport for London website, listed below.

The 2011 ABTT Theatre Show takes place from June 15-16 at the Royal Horticultural Halls, Victoria, London.
