A Christmas Carol, Moulin Rouge! Sweep Tony Design Awards

In a rare case of two shows taking home all the design kudos, A Christmas Carol and Moulin Rouge! cornered the market at the Tony Awards last night.

Winning for A Christmas Carol were Rob Howell (scenery and costumes), Hugh Vanstone (lighting), and Simon Baker (sound). Taking home awards from Moulin Rouge! were Derek McLane (scenery), Catherine Zuber (costumes), Justin Townsend (lighting), and Peter Hylenski sound).

In the biggest upset, Jeremy O. Harris' Slave Play, which was nominated in a record 12 categories, left empty handed. Instead, the nod for best play went to Matthew Lopez's The Inheritance, which also won for best actor (Andrew Burnap), director (Stephen Daldry), and featured actress (Lois Smith). A Christmas Carol, a play with songs, took the award for best score, as none of the nominated musicals featured original material; Christopher Nightingale is the composer. The Roundabout Theatre Company revival of Charles Fuller's A Soldier's Play was cited as best revival, with David Alan Grier, one of that production's stars, winning in the featured actor category.

Moulin Rouge! had the night's biggest sweep. Other winners from the show included lead actor Aaron Tveit, director Alex Timbers, choreographer Sonya Tayeh, featured actor Danny Burstein, and orchestrators Katie Kresek, Charlie Rosen, Matt Stine, and Justin Levine.
