Olivier Award Nominations Announced

A mix of UK and American designers has been nominated for the Olivier Awards, which honor achievement in London's West End Theatre scene. Recurring titles in the nominations include Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie, a transfer of the 2013 Broadway revival; the musical Groundhog Day, which begins Broadway previews on March 16; Harry Potter and the Cursed Child; and a revival of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park. Leading the nominees are Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, setting a new record for nominations for a play at 11, and Groundhog Day, with eight. Three productions of Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals were nominated: Jesus Christ Superstar; the revival of Sunset Boulevard, starring Glenn Close, now on Broadway; and the transfer, from Broadway, of School of Rock.

Nominees for the Blue-i Theatre Technology Award for Best Set Design included Bob Crowley, nominated twice for the musical Aladdin and The Glass Menagerie; Rob Howell, for Groundhog Day; and Christine Jones, for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Nominees for the White Light Award for Best Lighting Design are Neil Austin, for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child; Lee Curran, for Jesus Christ Superstar; Natasha Katz, for The Glass Menagerie; and Hugh Vanstone, for Groundhog Day.

Sound design nominees include Paul Arditti, for a revival of Amadeus at the National Theatre; Adam Cork, for a revival of Tom Stoppard's Travesties; Gareth Fry, for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child; and Nick Lidster, for Jesus Christ Superstar.

Costume design nominees include Gregg Barnes, for the new, reportedly Broadway-bound revival of Dreamgirls; Hugh Durrant, for Cinderella, a holiday pantomime production; Rob Howell, again for Groundhog Day; and Katrina Lindsay, for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
