Line 6 Digital Wireless Mics Chosen For Installation In The Cloverdale Performing Arts Center

Line 6, Inc.'s XD-V70 digital wireless microphone systems were chosen by the city of Cloverdale, in California's Sonoma County, for use in the new Cloverdale Performing Arts Center. The venue, which also draws patrons from the counties of Mendocino and Marin, is used for theatrical presentations, music performances, and public meetings.

Brian Elliott, owner of Eagle Creek Productions, volunteered his expertise and helped the town choose sound gear for installation in the theater. He was involved in the testing process that resulted in Cloverdale choosing Line 6 XD-70 digital wireless microphones for the venue's wireless needs.

"The city council wanted wireless microphones and had RF-signal problems with their previous models," he said. "That is why I started looking around for alternative options. With the assistance of [retailer] Bananas At Large in Santa Rosa, we Beta-tested several brands of wireless systems. I decided that the Line 6 digital wireless provided the best signal quality over long ranges-the mics would have to be used behind the stage area, out of line of sight to the control booth at times-and the sound quality was quite good."

One of the keys to the XD-V70 system's sonic integrity is its frequency diversity feature. It works by transmitting the signal on four separate frequencies resulting in excellent transmission reliability, the company says. In addition, the system offers 24-bit operation, and a compander-free dynamic range of up to 120 dBA.

Based on Elliott's recommendation, the town ended up purchasing 12 Line 6 digital wireless packages for the venue, including five XD-V70L lavalier systems and seven XD-V70 handheld systems. The XD-V70L includes an RX212 receiver, a TPB12 beltpack transmitter and an LM4-T lavalier mic. The receiver, which comes with a rackmount kit, features an LCD with a real-time display of channel, RF status, link status, battery life, and diversity-mode information. The mic has a cardioid pickup pattern, and includes a windscreen.

The handheld system includes an RX212 and a THH12 microphone. On both systems, Line 6 microphone modeling provides selectable emulations of six popular classic mics, and a seventh, nicknamed the "Super Model," which is a proprietary Line 6 design.

Elliott is pleased with the performance of the Line 6 digital wireless technology at the venue, and in particular its immunity to interference. "The system works far more reliably than the UHF systems previously used," he said.
