Gel Services Announces New Entertainment Lighting App

Gel Services, Inc. announces a new iOS app for entertainment lighting. ShadowMagic now allows the visualization of lights, colors, and shadows on an iPhone or iPad.

Standard configuration of the usser's theatre includes an actor, a cyclorama, and up to six lights. The stage is 40' x 30' with the actor positioned 10' upstage. The cyc is 40' wide x 20' high and is 30' upstage along the back edge of the stage. The viewing position is continuously variable with the ability to pan and zoom, from the back of the house to all the way in to just the actor's nose! The user even have a view from behind the cyc.

ShadowMagic offers two types of incandescent lights, a Source Four spotlight and a Source Four 7" Fresnel. Each type of light can be dimmed individually or with a master. One of the most important features of ShadowMagic is that the dimming changes the color temperature as intensity is decreased. The spotlight comes with five lens barrels: 14-, 19-, 26-, 36-, and 50-degrees. Each lens accurately shows the brightness of the light with that barrel installed. The shadows cast are sharp-edged and beautiful. The Fresnel zooms from flood to spot with the change in brightness and shadow softness, just like the real thing.

All gels from Lee Filters, Rosco, GAM, and Apollo Design are available for the user to add mood and tone to the scenes. Over 1,600 gels are available and can be put into a collection -- the company calls it a gelstring -- with up to 32 colors. The user sees in real time what happens to each of the gels as the color temperature drops.

Each of the six lighting positions are available with the user's choice of fixture. The positions can be moved anywhere in an 80' x 40' x 80' space. The scene is rendered in real time as the user is moving the light, so critical judgments can be made on the fly.

Lights can be assigned to the actor or to the cyc. If a light is assigned to the actor, it is automatically focused on the actor. As the position of the light is changed, it is continuously refocused on the actor. If a light is assigned to the cyc, a focus point can be assigned to the scrim and the light will focus on that point as it is moved around.

Scenes are easy, quick, and fun to create. Save as many scenes as needed. Share the scenes or a report of all the details with colleagues and friends.

ShadowMagic is available today on the App Store.
