Adhesive Theater Project to Present World Premiere; Benefit Performance NYCCT Planned

Adhesive Theater Project's The Service Road

Adhesive Theater Project will premiere The Service Road, written by Obie Award-winner Erin Courtney and directed by Meghan Finn.

The Service Road runs from Friday, January 11 - Saturday, February 2 in a limited engagement at the New York City College of Technology's Voorhees Theatre, located at 186 Jay Street in Brooklyn. Performances are Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 pm; Saturdays at 2pm; and Mondays at 1pm. Tickets are $15 while students pay $6.

The Monday, January 14 performance is a pay-what-you-will benefit, with all proceeds donated to students in the Entertainment Technology program of NYCCT who were severely affected by Hurricane Sandy. The running time is 70 minutes.

The Service Road begins when a violent storm of mythic proportions hits Prospect Park. The once peaceful service road turns strange and even savage as a nature guide attempts to find a lost child. On her quest she meets the denizens of one of the few natural places left in the city and attempts to atone for a wrongdoing in her past. Courtney examines what it means to be of service and the true nature of forgiveness. Sparse poetic language, an innovative video puppet, and a gravity-defying set come together in a highly visual multi-media production.

"Although the violent storm in The Service Road occurred in 2010, the play has taken on an unsettling significance for the entire creative team in the aftermath of Sandy," Finn says. "Several of the students working alongside our designers to create the technology and media for the show have been devastated, losing property or their homes. I think New York audiences will find a deepened resonance with the play having lived through that first week."

The cast includes Cory Einbinder, Kalle Macrides, Claire Moodey, and Caroline Tamas.

Einbinder designed the video and puppet pieces, while Sue Brandt designed the lighting, and Mark Bruckner composed the music and designed the sound. Tilly Grimes and Alice Tavener collaborated as the costume designer and assistant designer, respectively.

Courtney's play, A Map of Virtue, produced by 13P, won an Obie Award, and The New York Times described as "a delicate gem" and "a resonant tale of loss."
