2017 Tony Award Winners Announced

The winners of the 71st annual Tony Awards were announced June 11 at Radio City Music Hall. Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 dominated the design categories for a musical, with Mimi Lien taking home the award for scenery and Bradley King for lighting; their work famously turns the entire Imperial Theatre into a playing space for the musical, based on a section of the novel War and Peace. Santo Loquasto took the costume design award for Hello, Dolly!

In the play categories Nigel Hook took an award for his gag-filled, deconstructing set for the farce The Play That Goes Wrong,. In what may have been the most popular choice of the night, perpetual Tony bridesmaid Jane Greenwood took the costme design nod for the Manhattan Theatre Club production of The Little Foxes. Christopher Akerlind won for the lighting design of Indecent,, about the long and tumultuous history for the Yiddish-language drama God of Vengeance.

There were no sound design categories this year, although Gareth Fry and Pete Malkin received a special award for their work on the solo drama The Encounter. The sound design category will be restored next year.
