Drama Desk Nominations Announced

The nominations were announced this morning for this year's Drama Desk Awards, which honor achievement in the Broadway, Off Broadway, and Off Off Broadway theatre scenes. Leading the nominations are A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder with 12 nods, followed by The Bridges of Madison County with nine, Fun Home with eight, Aladdin and Rocky with seven each, and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and Bullets Over Broadway with six each.

In the category of outstanding set design, the nominees are Christopher Barreca for Rocky, Alexander Dodge for A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, Richard Hoover for Small Engine Repair, Santo Loquasto for Bullets Over Broadway, Ian MacNeil for A Doll's House, and Donyale Werle for The Explorers Club.

Lighting design nominees include Christopher Akerlind for Rocky, Jane Cox for Machinal, David Lander for The Civil War, Peter Mumford for King Lear, Brian Tovar for Tamar of the River, and Japhy Weideman for Macbeth.

The nominees for outstanding costume design are Constance Hoffman for A Midsummer Night's Dream, William Ivey Long for Bullets Over Broadway, Zane Philstrom for Nutcracker Rouge, Loren Shaw for The Mysteries, Jenny Tiramani for Twelfth Night, and David C. Woolard for The Heir Apparent.

Projection design nominees include Robert Massicotte and Alexis Laurence for Cirkopolis, Sven Ortel for A Midsummer Night's Dream, Aaron Rhyne for A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, Shawn Sagady for All the Way, Austin Switser for Sontag: Reborn, and Ben Rubin for Arguendo.

In the category of outstanding sound design in a musical, the nominees are Kai Harada for Fun Home, Peter Hylenski for Bullets Over Broadway, Peter Hylenski for Rocky, Brian Ronan for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Dan Moses Schreier for A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, and Jon Weston for The Bridges of Madison County.

Nominees for outstanding sound design in a play include M. L. Dogg for The Open House, Katie Down for The Golden Dragon, Paul James Prendergast for All the Way, Dan Moses Schreier for Act One, Christopher Shutt for Love and Information, and Matt Tierney for Machinal.

The 2013-2014 Drama Desk nominating committee is composed of Barbara Siegel, chairperson; Morgan Jenness; Samuel L. Leiter; Chad McArver; Martha Wade Steketee; and James Wilson. The 59th Annual Drama Desk Awards ceremony itself, hosted by Drama Desk Award winner Laura Benanti, will be held at The Town Hall on June 1.
