The Week in Review

Disaster in Indiana: As we report today, the production world was shaken by the collapse of a stage at the Indiana State Fair on Saturday, leaving four people killed and 50 injured. According to MSNBC.com, wind gusts of 60-70mph caused the collapse: "The seemingly capricious nature of the gust was evident Sunday at the fair, where crews placed a blue drape around the grandstand to block the view of the wreckage. A striped tent near the grandstand appeared unscathed, as did an aluminum trailer about 50 yards across from the grandstand. The Ferris wheel on the midway also escaped damage." The report adds, "Concert-goers and other witnesses said an announcer warned them of impending bad weather but gave conflicting accounts of whether emergency sirens at the fair sounded." We'll report more as information comes in.

Midas and Klark Teknik Sets Up In-House North American Distribution: Midas and Klark Teknik have announced a change to their North American distribution, part of a complete reorganization of the way in which MKT products are brought to market in the USA and Canada. The move sees Midas Consoles North America set up as a wholly owned business unit of the Music Group, owner of the Midas and Klark Teknik brands. MKT customer support will remain in the experienced and capable hands of Midas Consoles North Americas' Jay Easley, supported by existing members of his customer support and service team.

Boston Publick Theatre on Hiatus: The Boston Publick Theatre has seen the resignation of Diego Arcieniegas, its artistic director, and Susan Nitter, its producing director, according to Playbill.com. As a result, the company is officially on hiatus while the board of directors searches for replacements. An official statement notes that the pair will "continue to collaborate with BCA programming independently and will continue to serve on the board of the Publick Theatre through this transition phase." This is the company's 40th year.

Starlight Theatre Files for Bankruptcy: Starlight Theatre, based in San Diego's Balboa Park, has filed for bankruptcy, according to the website Signon San Diego. Formerly known as the San Diego Civic Light Opera, the company has operated for 65 years. Although this was an extremely difficult decision for Starlight, filing for legal reorganization is an important first step toward securing a financially sound and sustainable future for a beloved San Diego treasure," John Redman, a Starlight advisor and current President of the Horton Plaza Theatre Foundation, said in a statement. "It is our expectation to rapidly emerge from reorganization to once more offer the best of American musical theatre to family audiences." According to the website, "It won't be the first time Starlight has gone dark; the company canceled its 1995 and 1996 summer seasons, but was able to rebound with one of its most artistically rewarding periods."
