Polynesian Cultural Center Restaurant Renovated with Help from 4Wall Systems

The 4Wall systems and design team recently assisted the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie, Hawaii, in renovating its Gateway Restaurant. The Gateway features a 25,000-sq.-ft. dining hall that offers culturally authentic Polynesian dishes.

Paul Hixon, of Helius Lighting Group, created the design concept, which was then passed to the 4Wall Systems team to see through to completion. In addition to design, the challenging project required 4Wall to provide project management as well as custom manufacturing.

4Wall's designer on the project, Brent Pritchett, spoke of the lighting inside the Gateway: "Every fixture in the dining hall and on the exterior is LED, all controlled by a Color Kinetics Light System Manager (LSM) for the color changing fixtures, and an ETC Unison Paradigm Processor to trigger the LSM and non-color changing fixtures."

In addition to providing control solutions, 4Wall was tasked with designing lighting for 37 custom sea shell themed sconces, fourteen of which were to have a visible flickering flame above the shell. 4Wall solved the problem with a fan and silk mechanism that utilized Philips Color Kinetics iColor MRg2 lamps and MX Cove Powercore fixtures to light the silk movement and create a subtle glow within the shell.

The finished venue is a hall that smoothly uses color changing to transition from a warm afternoon vibe to an intimate moonlight dining experience.

The Gateway Restaurant opened November 11 and is the second renovation 4Wall has assisted the PCC of Hawaii with, the first being the complete renovation of their Pacific Theatre venue where HA: Breath of Life, a Polynesian spectacular, is performed nightly.
