dBTechnologies VIO Delivers Festival Sound for Supergirl Surf's Virginia Beach Debut The inaugural Virginia Beach Super Girl Surf Festival brought three days of professional surfing, women's sports, and free live music to the oceanfront over Labor Day weekend, supported by a dBTechnologies VIO system designed to carry full-range concert sound across a wide, deep audience area built directly on the sand. Held September 5-7, the Virginia Beach event marked the newest addition to the Super Girl Festival Series as it celebrated its 20th anniversary. The free program combined a World Surf League competition with more than 4,000 female athletes participating across 14 sports, 24 fitness and wellness classes, mentorship programming, a festival village and 22 concerts. Switchfoot, CeeLo Green, Lupe Fiasco, Gym Class Heroes, B.o.B, Collie Buddz, Bryce Vine and HIRIE led a lineup that ran throughout the holiday weekend. Shadow Mountain Productions supplied the majority of the production package and provided lighting and video for the festival. Cardon Audio Productions contributed VIO S118 subwoofers and VIO L1608 line array modules, while additional VIO L1610 modules and VIO S218 subwoofers were cross-rented from Baltimore-based Media Minds. Cam Cardon of Cardon Audio Productions designed and deployed the loudspeaker system and served as system technician, A1, and front-of-house engineer. Brandon McMeen mixed monitors, with several touring acts bringing their own engineers. The main PA was built around left and right arrays of 10 VIO L1610 three-way line array modules. Two VIO S118 subwoofers were flown in line with each array, extending low-frequency support from the same elevation as the mains. Ten VIO S218 dual-18" subwoofers were deployed on the ground, with two cabinets positioned behind the forward line to create an end-fire array and control low-frequency energy behind the system. Four compact VIO L1608 modules provided front-fill coverage across the first rows. The configuration addressed an audience area estimated at approximately 200' wide and 500' deep. With the stage and audience located directly on the beach, the crew also had to move the system and production equipment across deep sand. Skid steers fitted with forks replaced conventional rolling transport during load-in and placement. "The system sounded phenomenal," says Cardon. "I was impressed by the amount of clarity we had hundreds of feet away. The throw from the L1610s was really impressive. The subwoofers sounded punchy and clean, and you could feel them all the way down the beach. The L1610 and L1608 sound very similar, so using the L1608 as front fill integrated seamlessly into the overall system." An Allen & Heath dLive S7000 served as the front-of-house console, paired with a dLive S5000 at monitors. An Avid VENUE | S6L was brought in for Switchfoot's headline set. dBTechnologies DVX DM15 wedges covered stage monitoring, supplemented by Shure Axient Digital PSM in-ear systems and ULX-D wireless. For Cardon, the festival also represented an early large-scale outing for a newly established inventory. After several years working with VIO systems for other production companies, he began building the Cardon Audio Productions rental package in 2026 with eight VIO L1608 modules, four VIO S118 subwoofers and two OPERA REEVO 212 loudspeakers. The company also supplied the PA for the 2026 Super Girl Surf Festival in Oceanside, California. The Virginia Beach debut extended the Super Girl platform to a third coastal market alongside its established events in Oceanside and Jacksonville. Created by ASA Entertainment in 2007, the series combines women's sports, music, education and mentorship in free, family-focused festivals. Across the wider platform, Super Girl reports nearly 250,000 attendees, more than 8,000 female athletes, over 50 concerts and more than 60 fitness and wellness classes.
