Hamilton Dominates in Tony Design Categories; Rockwell, Ramos, and Katz Among Other Winners

The 2016 Tony Awards winners were announced June 12. Best Musical winner Hamilton triumphed in 11 categories, including Costume Design of a Musical (Paul Tazewell) and Lighting Design of a Musical (Howell Binkley). Best Play winner The Humans also took home the award for Scenic Design of a play (David Zinn).

Additional winners included David Rockwell, for the scenic design of the musical She Loves Me, Clint Ramos for the costume design of the play Eclipsed, and Natasha Katz, for the lighting design of the Roundabout Theatre Company revival of Long Day's Journey Into Night.

The ceremony began on a somber note, with an acknowledgment of the killings at an Orlando gay bar -- the largest such atrocity in US history -- with several winners also commenting on the atrocity.

Because of the Hamilton sweep, and also thanks to a high-wattage list of presenters, the broadcast enjoyed its highest rating since 2001.
