ADJ Lighting & Effects Create Wow Factor For Super Car Launch

The Koenigsegg Gemera supercar was officially launched to the Polish market.

When the new $1.9 million Koenigsegg Gemera supercar was officially launched to the Polish market last month, the VIP event included a lighting rig created using more than 50 ADJ fixtures. Providing mood lighting while the VIP guests arrived, the rig was then used -- together with low-lying fog from an ADJ Entour Ice -- to create a high-impact reveal for the star of the show.

With a truly astronomical price tag, the Gemera is marketed by the Swedish high-performance sports car manufacturer as the world's first "Mega-GT" (grand tourer). The limited production car is a four-seater with a hybrid engine and spacious interior, but offers sports car performance. Capable of going from 0-100km/h (62mph) in just 1.9 seconds, and with a top speed of 400 km/h (249mph), if offers the true sports car experience to the driver and up to three passengers.

Since it was first announced at the beginning of the year, the car has attracted a lot of attention from the supercar-loving mega-rich all over the world. So, when the first one arrived in Poland, Koenigsegg's local distributor, Maranello Motors (part of the Pietrzak Group), decided to host an event worthy of both the record-breaking car and its potential new owners. Having previously worked with the company before on other projects, they brought in local event organization and production company Falp to transform the event space with light, video and effects.

The team at Falp were given the creative freedom to design and produce the overall event as well as the actual premiere of the Gemera, which ran prior to the car being unveiled to guests. Falp event manager, Magdalena Pietrasiak, explains, "It was an honor for us to be a part of the grand premiere of the Gamera, and it is all thanks to our CEO, Przemyslaw Szymanek; we are able to work on amazing projects like this because of his vision. Our client, the Pietrzak Group, trusted us to design and create everything about the event, they just told us what cars would be on display. To match the Koenigsegg brand and the luxurious feel of the new car, we ensured a clean installation, with no visible wires and no floor-standing truss. We wanted the focus to be on the cars, and we used ADJ lighting to highlight them as well as to enhance the atmosphere for the VIP guests."

To build anticipation for the moment the Gamera was unveiled, the Falp team designed and programmed a multimedia show that combined video graphics -- displayed on a screen behind the car -- with lighting, audio, laser effects, and low fog generated by an ADJ Entour Ice. The show began with a blackout and then the pace and intensity of the video, audio, and lighting elements slowly built to a crescendo at which point the car was dramatically revealed. The key fixtures used for the show were the Vizi Beam Z37, Focus Spot 6Z, Encore Burst 200, and Vizi Beam RXONE.

Featuring thirty-seven 20W quad color (RGBW) LEDs and a motorized zoom range of between 10 and 60-degrees, the Vizi Wash Z37 is billed as an extremely powerful and versatile moving head wash fixture. Three of these units were rigged to a truss behind the Gemera, while an additional set of three were positioned on a second truss in front of the car. This allowed for both back and front washing to ensure the star of the show was highlighted from every angle. Not only were they used for color but the front fixtures also provided warm white illumination when company officials addressed the gathered VIPs.

The recently released Focus Spot 6Z is the current flagship model of ADJ's Focus Series of LED-powered moving head fixtures. It combines an extremely potent 300W cool white LED engine with precision-engineered optics and an extensive collection of beam-shaping features to offer lighting designers a huge amount of creative potential, the company says. For the Gemera launch, two of the units were rigged behind the car to project break-apart GOBO patterns and mid-air beam effects.

Offering a viable power-saving alternative to traditional fixtures, the Encore Burst 200 is an LED-powered 2-cell blinder. Featuring a pair of 110W warm white (2700K) CREE COB LEDs housed in a rugged IPX4 weatherproof enclosure, the unit offers comparable output to a conventional fixture using 650W halogen lamps. It is also capable of generating the same effect, thanks to a unique Tungsten mode, which reduces the color temperature at lower intensity settings to match the unique dimming characteristics of a conventional binder lamp. For this project, four of the fixtures were used to added impactful blinder moments to the launch presentation as well as to warmly illuminate the car following the unveiling.

Finally, four Vizi Beam RXONE moving head fixtures were positioned on the floor, surrounding the car from the sides and behind. One of ADJ's best-selling fixtures, the RXONE is billed as both incredibly compact and incredibly powerful. Featuring an OsramSirius HRI 1R long life discharge lamp, focused through super sharp optics, it generates a 3-degree beam that is well suited for aerial effects. It enhanced the Gemera launch by shooting beams up and around the covered car as the tension built towards its much-anticipated début.

In addition to the launch of the Gamera, visitors to the event also had the opportunity to see four of Koenigsegg's other luxury super cars in the flesh. To illuminate these, and to create a celebratory atmosphere for the whole event, the Falp team also installed three additional trusses filled with ADJ lighting fixtures. These included Vizi Hex Wash7 moving heads for wash lighting as well as Focus Spot 3Z, Focus Spot 4Z and Focus Beam LED moving heads for GOBO projections and mid-air beam effects.

Also, to add to the exclusive feel of the event, a pair of ADJ's Hydro Beam X2 IP65-rated moving head beam fixtures were setup, at the end of a red carpet, flanking the door to the venue. These were used to shoot piercing white 'search light' beam effects up into the night sky. To help achieve a "clean installation," the Falp team made use of the fixture's in-built WiFLY EXR wireless DMX receiver to control the fixtures without having to run DMX cables outside.

"We were very happy with all of the ADJ equipment we used for the Koenigsegg premiere," states Falp's other event manager, Marta Maszczykowska. "None of the fixtures disappointed us, and they allowed us to realize our vision for the event, nicely highlighting the venue and most importantly the cars. We were particularly amazed by the Vizi Wash Z37, Focus Spot 6Z, and the Hydro Beam X2, all of which we were using for the first time. The Hydro Beam X2 is so bright it could be seen right across the city!"

Because of the high profile nature of the event, and the design aesthetic of Koenigsegg cars, attention to detail was essential across the whole project. Achieving this was made more difficult due to a tight window for setup. Access to the event space was only possible from 8pm the night before the premiere, which meant that the ten-person installation team -- led by Falp's technical director, Przemyslaw Trzcina, had to work through the night to have everything setup, working and immaculately presented for when the doors opened at 3:pm.

Not only was everything ready in time, the whole event -- including the unveiling show, which was repeated three times across the three-day event -- ran smoothly and was extremely well-received by both the organizers and their VIP guests. Credit for this success has to be given to the whole team at Falp, who worked collaboratively to design and implement the project, although they were kind enough to also acknowledge the support they received from ADJ.

"The ADJ sales team in Poland -- Jarek Stepien and Adam Waloszczyk -- always look after us very well and that high level of service also extends to the after-sales support we receive," enthuses Pietrasiak. "As an events company often working on high profile projects," adds Maszczykowska, "we need equipment that allows us to achieve our creative vision and that we can also rely on, and this is what we get from ADJ."

Following the successful Koenigsegg Gemera launch event, the team at Falp are already working on more high-profile projects they have lined up for later in the year. As the company continues to grow, they are also planning to increase their inventory of ADJ products with more new fixtures in the near future.
