LMG Show Technology Supports 2014 Discovery Upfront

Discovery Communications' upfront

LMG, a national provider of full service technology solutions, recently provided video, audio, LED, and lighting support for the 2014 Discovery Upfront in the Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater in New York City. Working for production company, DePalma Production, Inc. and Discovery Communications, Inc., LMG has supported the Discovery Upfront since 2001.

Discovery Communications, Inc. has been the longtime leader in bringing innovation and high-end content to the masses through 14 US cable and satellite networks, and 47 international TV brands -- such as the Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, Science Channel, and OWN network -- to name a few. The Discovery Upfront is designed for advertisers in order to preview the networks' upcoming programming lineup, with the ultimate goal of generating advertising revenue. A media giant, Discovery Communications has a reputation for distributing not only the highest quality content, but setting the standard in broadcasting technology, and the upfront event required a technical solution that would convey the true nature of the on-stage programming.

For 25 years, Discovery Communications has relied on New York-based DePalma Production, Inc. to produce its premier event and convey the true nature of their high-end programming. The concept for the 2014 Discovery Upfront event was to create a "larger than life" experience, where the media takes center stage. The goal was to produce a massive multi-media canvas on stage for each network to customize their unique visuals for the audience. To create this canvas, the design involved a large 17' x 51' raised center screen, to showcase the true HD media, surrounded by a backdrop of high resolution 11.25mm LED tiles that enhanced the content, and could be used to create a larger canvas of images supporting the visuals of the main screen.

LMG Show Technology provided three Barco HDF-W26 projectors for the main screen to display the high definition media, driven by LMG's four camera HD flypack system, which utilizes the Snell Kahuna broadcasting switcher. For the backdrop surrounding the main screen, LMG provided 400 11.25mm FLED io11 tiles, a lightweight and high resolution LED solution. To bring the visuals to life, LMG provided a state-of-the-art line array speaker system utilizing 24 L-Acoustics KARA speakers and six SB-28 subwoofers for the main sound, along with six L-Acoustics 115XT's for high end surround sound effects. For lighting, LMG provided a full complement of LED fixtures and moving lights, including a mix of Chroma-Q Color Force 72, Color Force 48, and Color Force 12 fixtures, Robe Robin 600 Wash LEDs, Clay Paky Sharpys, and Vari-Lite VL 3000 Spots, VL 3500 Spots, and VL 3500 Wash lights.

"This show is unique because we are working with a client that embraces technology and sets the standard for producing the highest level of content," says Les Goldberg, CEO and president of LMG. "We use the best tools in our repertoire, along with a first-rate crew that has been supporting this event consistently for many years," states Goldberg. "This show simply represents some of our best work."
