The development was first reported by Broadway News, which added that Mazzella announced his decision in a letter to employees.

The story adds, "Day-to-day operations will be under the purview of incoming CEO Stephen Kaus, who will be supervised by Robert Halmi of Great Point Studios."

Mazzella founded Hudson Scenic Studio in 1980, building scenery for countless Broadway shows. Mazzella and Hudson Theatrical Associates, the latter founded in 2007, has provided technical supervision for productions such as A Few Good Men, The Piano Lesson, The Who's Tommy, Angels in America, The Life, Proof, The Boy From Oz, Spring Awakening, Young Frankenstein, Fela!, Newsies, Aladdin, Hamilton, Hadestown, The Inheritance, Oh Mary!, Maybe Happy Ending, Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York), as well as major revivals of Long Day's Journey Into Night, The Glass Menagerie, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and Waiting for Godot.

In 2013, Mazzella partnered with Neil O'Connor and Corky Boyd in the ownership of Hudson Scenic effective immediately. Mazzella became chairman with O'Connor as CEO, and Boyd as senior vice president overseeing project management and sales. In 2022, Hudson Scenic Studio was purchased by Great Point Studios, the film and television production facility.
