Newest Gilbert Hemsley Intern Announced

Conor Mulligan, Hemsley Intern

Conor Mulligan has been named recipient of the 32nd annual Hemsley Internship.

The Hemsley Internship is a nine-month program dedicated to the training of young theatre professionals. It was created in 1983, in memory of respected lighting designer Gilbert V. Hemsley, Jr., who died that year.

Hemsley is remembered for his work at the Metropolitan Opera and Broadway shows, as well as his unflagging efforts to train young artists "in whom Gilbert saw both the desire for involvement and an innate spark of talent." Students were able to shadow Hemsley on a variety of projects across the country, meeting theatre professionals and developing their craft in a hands-on setting.

This year's Hemsley Intern comes to the program with an extensive resume. Milligan has a BS in theatre design and production from Towson University and is currently working on his MFA in design and technical theatre at San Diego State University. Among his credits are Teddy's Doll House at the NYC Fringe Festival in 2014, as well as several productions for the Iron Crow Theatre Company and SDSU's Don Powell Theatre.

The internship itself continues Hemsley's vision of learning by doing. Mulligan's journey will start in June, where he will be working with Aaron Copp, lighting supervisor at the Lincoln Center Festival. From there, it's off to assist Gary Marder, resident lighting designer at San Francisco Opera. In November, he will be at New York's City Center, working with Al Crawford, lighting director for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's winter season. Finally, in January he will provide support to Penny Jacobus, lighting director at the New York City Ballet.
