Broadway Green Alliance to Hold E-Waste Collection Drive in Times Square February 3, 11:00 - 2:00pm

The Broadway Green Alliance (BGA) is hosting an e-waste drive for the theatre industry and fans on Wednesday, February 3, from 11:00am - 2:00pm in Duffy Square (Broadway and 46th St.). The recycling event is open to all shows, theatres, industry members, and fans.

E-waste, or electronic waste, refers to old electronic devices that are no longer wanted. These products contain dangerous toxins like lead and mercury that should not be thrown in with the rest of the trash, but should be recycled instead. In fact, as of January 2015 it is illegal to throw away any items of e-waste in New York State. The BGA is partnering with the Lower East Side Ecology Center (lesecologycenter.org) for this event. As LESEC also has an e-waste store, they are also able to accept batteries as well as items that still work, (labelled as such) at this event.

Accepted donations this year include laptops, desktops, monitors, televisions, and remotes, computer cables, mice, keyboards, gaming consoles, telecom equipment, small electronic appliances (coffee makers, toasters), cellphones, and accessories. They cannot accept light bulbs, wet-cell batteries, large appliances, air conditioners, or any dangerous items.

"We are pleased to work with LESEC on the theatre community's winter e-waste drive, as part of our work to make theatre greener," said BGA coordinator, Rebekah Sale.

The Broadway Green Alliance educates, motivates, and inspires the entire theater community and its patrons to implement environmentally friendlier practices. The BGA, launched in 2008, is an ad hoc committee of The Broadway League and an affiliate program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids. The BGA brings together all segments of the theater community, including producers, theaters in New York and around the country, theatrical unions and their members, and related businesses. Working closely with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the BGA identifies and disseminates better practices for theater professionals and reaches out to theater fans throughout the country.
