MEGA-LITE Fixtures Featured in Hairspray at San Pedro Playhouse For the recent production of Hairspray at the San Pedro Playhouse in San Antonio, Texas, the production team used a variety of MEGA-LITE fixtures that supported key moments throughout the show. Hairspray follows Tracy Turnblad, a girl with big dreams and even bigger hair. Her love for dance lands her a spot on The Corny Collins Show, a popular TV dance program, turning her into an overnight sensation. Alongside lively musical numbers, the show addresses themes of diversity, social justice, and inclusion highlighted by songs like "You Can't Stop the Beat" and the uplifting "Welcome to the 60's." Lighting designer Mackenzie Mulligan used four Framebot 600 units to bring texture, color, and motion to standout numbers including "Welcome to the 60's," "I Can Hear the Bells," and "You Can't Stop the Beat." These moments required lighting that could respond dynamically to music and choreography. The Framebot 600 is a full-featured automated framing spot with a 580W 7000K LED source, delivering over 20,500 lumens of output. The team noted that the gobos cut cleanly through bright stage washes, moved smoothly -- even at slow speeds -- and operated quietly throughout the show. For the "On Air" scenes inside the Corny Collins studio, Mackenzie incorporated four Vintage Scoop Q32 fixtures, mounted on a dedicated line set with a light-up sign to recreate the atmosphere of a 1960s television studio. The Vintage Scoop Q32 features a 32W RGBWW LED paired with a reflective gold interior, which helped add warmth and depth to the saturated color palette. As part of the DECO Line, these fixtures were controlled through the Tetra Driver 4, providing four individually addressable outputs for flexible and efficient setup. Daniel Kurokawa, director of production at San Pedro Playhouse, shares: "Being able to use the MEGA-LITE Framebots to punch through our washes and add extra movement to our LED practical looks gave us exactly what we needed to make this production look massive." Hairspray continues its run into August.
